A slew of major projects in both public and private sectors is expected to create thousands of jobs in Townsville, leading to a positive outlook felt by businesses.
Over $420 million in funding has been promised from both the State and Federal Government into new projects including:
- a new water supply pipeline for Townsville city
- major defense programs including the Australia-Singapore Military Training Initiative
- large-scale industrial projects like the expansion of Sun Metals’ $300 million zinc refinery
- further development of a stadium with managing contractor Watpac
Townsville Chamber of Commerce president Debbie Rains said the projects adding to developments
In quotes obtained by the Townsville Bulletin, Ms Rains said the projects are “restoring confidence in the city” and “the unemployment levels have come down and that people see long-term job opportunities.”
Townsville City Council has committed almost $400 million in capital works projects.
Mayor Jenny Hill said the council would continue to focus on creating jobs and building diversity in the economy.
